CanoeTech Review: iRig KEYS PRO hits the right notes

KeysPro+iPad When iRig KEYS, IK Multimedia’s mobile MIDI keyboard, hit the streets about a year or so ago, people were most impressed with it’s functionality, ease of operations with iOS devices and loved its size. It was adored by most people who used it except for those who felt the actual keys themselves were slightly on the small side – a tradeoff for ultra-portability. For those people, today is a happy day as IK Multimedia released the iRig KEYS PRO. It’s identical in functionality and performance compared to the original with some exceptions: it’s bigger, it has full-sized keys and features Apple’s new Lightning connector built right in.

Where’s the remote? This is a cry often heard in my household. It’s usually followed by, “which one,” a ritual that occurs on a regular basis, most often on a Friday or Saturday night. After fiddling and fumbling, looking under the couch between the cushions or maybe under the newspaper, the missing remote is usually found along with another you weren’t looking for, yet. However sometimes, like in the case of the pocket-size Apple remote, it may be destined to never be found.

I recently had an opportunity to be a guest at the London Drugs Retail Tech Group Conference and Trade show in Whistler, BC. It’s really nice to see that, even while technology is growing at an exponential rate, there’s still plenty of room for face-to-face interaction and one-on-one product demonstrations. Truth be told, it makes a whale of a difference. There were about 60 vendors in attendance and we managed to see a number of new and nifty things, many of which would make ideal gifts for the holidays. While it would be impossible to cover the whole gamut of what I saw in a short time, here are a few items, in no particular order, that I thought stood out and would make some great gifts for the upcoming holidays.

If you’re heading out to Trick or Treat on Halloween, jog around the neighbourhood or you’re off to locations unknown, it’s probably a good idea to check in with your loved ones to let them know you’re ok. But despite our best intentions we sometimes just forget and unknowingly causing unnecessary worry at home. So isn’t it nice to know that there’s an app that will not only remind you to check in but it will send an SMS alert and or email to a designated emergency contact if you don’t.

It’s called Guardian AlertME, by SnakeHead Software, LLC. Designed for iOS it’s easy to set up and easy to use. Right through the app, you simply register with your name, optional email address and a 4-digit PIN, which acts as your password.
