When the Square Reader for Magstripe hit the market in Canada just over a decade ago, it was a game changer for small businesses to accept credit card payments. Fast forward to 2019 and we were excited to announce our favourite little payment processor Square was able to accept credit and debit card payments wirelessly. Since then the technology has taken a leap, industry regulations have changed and the market has moving away from the tried and true magstripe. It’s now focusing on more secure chip and pin technology and contactless transactions. To that end, Square has announced that their flagship Square Reader for Magstripe will be discontinued officially in Canada on October 13, 2022.

Shop safely online without using your credit card number

EDMONTON, Alta., April 30, 2017 /Troy Media/ – You can shop anywhere for just about anything online or with your smartphone – even for groceries.

It’s a convenient part of the daily routine for many.

However, some people are hesitant, even fearful, about making themselves vulnerable by using their credit card online. When retail giants like Home Depot, Target and Marshalls are hacked and credit card numbers are compromised, it’s easy to understand the fear.

But those fears may lessen as online shopping changes are made. Many processors and service providers are offering more payment alternatives online or via smartphone. They offer a third-party user ID and password each time you check out. You still use your favourite credit card and collecting those valuable reward points, but you never have to enter or reveal your number, expiry date or security code.

I’m sure many of you by now are familiar with Square. It’s a service that allows businesses or even individuals to accept payment by credit card using a little dongle attached to the headphone jack of their smartphone or tablet. This type of service relies on the ability to securely transmit card information either through an Internet connection or data connection like 3G, 4G or LTE.
